Teaching PSHE at Headlands
Intent
At Headlands Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
PSHE is taught across the school from Reception - Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.
With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core values of being respectful, resilient, kind & empathetic, creative, aspirational and independent.
Implementation
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school mission statement which aims to ensure that all children will reach their full potential in a happy, caring, safe and respectful environment.
We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the ‘whole child’ through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Differences
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
In Reception, in addition to following the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, PSED is accessed through the EYFS framework. The children learn how to self-regulate, manage self and build relationships. PSED is one of the prime areas of learning in the EYFS.
Impact
What will this look like?
By the time children leave our school they will:
- have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere;
- have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships;
- have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society;
- have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.

Please note that as a school we have decided not to teach sex education through our PSHE curriculum but it will be taught as part of the science curriculum in Year 5/6.
Teaching British Values at Headlands
At Headlands we uphold and teach pupils about the British Values as directed under the Ofsted Guidance published in September 2022:
'Schools are crucial in preparing pupils for their adult lives, teaching them to understand how to engage with society and providing them with plentiful opportunities to do so ... through the curriculum, assemblies, wider opportunities, visits, discussions and literature, develops and deepens pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance'
